You must have heard about something old, new, borrowed and blue tradition, have seen it in movies or witnessed its implementation at a wedding. Perhaps it has even intrigued you and want to understand its meaning. In fact, this phrase is a line from a poem that reads in full:

Something old,
something new,
something borrowed,
something blue,
and a sixpence in her shoe .

Something old,

And a sixpence in her shoe.

These lines of poetry originated in England during the Victorian era and symbolize luck and a happy marriage. For centuries brides in many parts of the world, especially in the UK, Ireland and America, have incorporated it into their wedding day. Everyone something is an object that the happy bride must carry with her before she goes to the altar, besides those all have a special meaning. Although this tradition does not guarantee a successful marriage, it is a good way to celebrate your special day to include important people who cannot be present, memories and objects associated with them.

Something old

This item symbolizes the connection between the bride's past and her family. It can be anything related to the bride family history, such as grandmother's locket, mother's wedding dress or pearl earrings, or a small trinket that seamlessly sewn into the dress. It symbolizes the strength of the family and gives a blessing for the future.

Something new

This is usually the easiest because the bride must have adorned herself with many new things on her wedding day.

It can be a gift from the future husband, such as a necklace, or self-purchased shoes, new perfume, underwear and others things. Something new symbolizes a fresh start, a fresh chapter in a relationship and a long and happy future together.

Something borrowed

This item is usually presented by family members or friends of the bride who are happily married. Something borrowed symbolizes the couple's happiness, which is passed on to the newlyweds, and the bride's ability to always seek support from those closest to her. Often it is the ushers who provide this symbol, thereby transferring the energy of their happy marriage to the new couple. It can be a photo hidden in a bouquet of flowers, a charm sewn into a veil, a hair band or other accessories. It should be remembered that this item must be returned to its owners after the wedding, because as the name suggests, it is borrowed.

Something blue

Choosing this color for a wedding may seem incomprehensible at first, but blue is associated with love, purity, trust and simplicity. To keep the tradition, the bride can choose blue jewelry, shoes or garter, flowers in her own in the bride's bouquet or simply write a wish for yourself with blue ink on the soles of your shoes.

Sixpence in her shoe

The last line in this poem is often forgotten because the sixpence was a unit of money in Victorian England and no longer is not produced. It symbolizes lasting wealth and prosperity. In America, pennies are often replaced by pennies. Traditionally the bride's father gives this coin to the new wife just before going to the altar. The coin is placed in the bride's shoe, later sewn into a dress or hidden somewhere else.
